Chapter 7

“What the hell did you do?” Bryson uttered the minute he walked into the house he still shared with Elise. He walked in and saw various items that belonged to him scattered all over the floor of their foyer and living room. Elise sat in the living room flipping through the latest Essence Magazine seemingly unbothered by his presence. She pulled the magazine down slightly so her face could be seen and darted her eyes over at Bryson.

“What do you mean? You text me earlier to say you were coming over to get some of your things, so I figured I would be a good little wife and help you,” Elise replied and then pulled her magazine back in front of her face and continued on with reading.

“Elise, you can’t be serious. My things are sitting here scattered in a million pieces! It seems like the only things you’ve left intact were my bibles.”

“I left your bibles alone cuz you know that’s the one thing I don’t play with is Jesus,” Elise smiled. She then closed up her magazine and set it down on the coffee table. She crossed one leg over the other and watched on in enjoyment as her husband examined his things one by one. The first thing he picked up was his gray dress shirt.

“You cut my gray dress shirt, I can’t ever wear this shirt again. There was nothing wrong with this shirt!”

“Oh, I was actually trying to fix that for you and I ended up slipping with the scissors. I’m sorry,” She held up her hands. He set the dress shirt down and picked up a pair of his black dress pants.

“And what about these, huh? You threw bleach all over these!”

“Correction, Bryson. I didn’t throw bleach on your pants, I was walking past the bottle of bleach and accidentally knocked it over and your pants just so happened to be right next to it.”

“Elise, this is absolutely ridiculous. I came over to get some of my things, not this trash.”

“Well now, you know how I feel. All I wanted to do was be your wife and have a happy life but you have treated me like complete trash. At least you can replace all these things. It’s hard to replace the hurt that I feel in my heart, Bryson. You have treated me like trash and you know it.” Elise’s statement struck a chord with Bryson. His anger grew as he stood there.

“So I’ve treated you like trash? I’m trying to clarify this with you. You think I’ve treated you like trash? How so? You’re living up in this big beautiful house that I pay for and I haven’t asked you for a dime even though I know if I asked you for something, you wouldn’t have anything to give me because you don’t even have two cents to rub together. You’re still driving around in your luxury car and wearing all of your fine, expensive clothes, but all you can muster up and say is that I’ve treated you like trash? Sounds to me like someone is very ungrateful.
